By comparing Trump’s campaign challenges to Barack Obama’s, Coates provides a concrete example for understanding the socially sanctioned rights and privileges afforded to whites that are withheld from people of color. People of color are often perceived, evaluated, judged, and held accountable to different standards of behavior than whites.
That is what modern racism looks like. Authentic friendships that cross racial lines exist when friends of color can relate their experiences of racism and discrimination and not have their realities minimized or rejected by white friends. And white friends can give witness to privilege and not have their experiences met by their friends of color with blame, shame, or anger. These friendships provide a natural juxtaposition of how the world reacts to people of color and whites. Cross-racial friendships hold the possibility for changing the narrative and eradicating modern racism.
